Confidence is high–until Chase’s lucky batting glove turns up missing the day of the semifinal game. Unsure whether the theft represents a personal attack or an attempt to derail the entire baseball team, Chase must track down the culprit and find the glove before the team boards the bus at 3 o’clock. Surprising and suspense-filled plot twists fill the pages of this single-day, real-time mystery thriller.

About the Chase Manning Mystery Series

Encyclopedia Brown and Jack Bauer have passed the torch to Chase Manning.

The Chase Manning Mystery Series features single-day, real-time thrillers that occur on an elementary school campus. Written for readers 8-12 years of age by National Board Certified Teacher Steve Reifman, the series launched with the award-winning Chase Against Time, in which fifth grader Chase Manning must investigate the mysterious disappearance of the cello that the school plans to auction off to save its prestigious music program. Chase Against Time has enjoyed rave reviews from children, parents, and teachers. Young readers love the book’s fast-paced, action-packed format while parents and teachers appreciate the book’s kid-friendly tone and content. Chase is now back in the eagerly anticipated sequel, Chase for Home.

Note for Elementary School Teachers and Parents

Chase Against Time and Chase for Home are Level Q on the Fountas & Pinnell scale. Both books are ideally suited to be used as read alouds and mentor texts during Reading Workshop and Writing Workshop units on mystery and “edge-of-seat” fiction because they include numerous examples of end-of-chapter cliffhangers, red herrings, suspects, motives, and other important mystery elements. If you are interested in teaching children how to craft their own mysteries, check out Steve’s e-book, The Ultimate Mystery Writing Guide for Kids.

Inside a multi-million dollar mansion in the quiet well-to-do Belle Meade area of Nashville, a sixty-something widow is murdered. Unsolved after eight years, no one has the nerve to call this one a cold case, at least not in the presence of the victim’s brother, Music City Mayor Harrison Rowe.
Still frustrated by the lack of evidence and convinced he knows who the killer is; Mayor Rowe pulls rank and calls in veteran Nashville homicide detective, Sergeant Mike Neal. Rowe is familiar with Sergeant Neal’s unique past and he’s certain this investigator will have no trouble relating to the case.
The mayor’s appeal is motivated by his knowledge of Sergeant Neal’s most recent assignment. A young attorney was murdered near his home in Brentwood. The early stages of Sergeant Neal’s investigation have produced a person of interest, Nashville financial advisor Barrett Stone, who was the son of Mayor Rowe’s sister’s fiance and the man Rowe is convinced killed his sister.
The morning following Sergeant Neal’s initial interview with Barrett Stone, the offices of Stone Asset Management, as well as all client investment accounts, are found empty. Initial investigations uncover reliable evidence that Barrett Stone has left the country with a new identity and forty-five million dollars.
Mayor Rowe, guided by this knowledge and desiring revenge even more than justice, charges Sergeant Neal with one solitary assignment. Find Barrett Stone, and bring him back to Nashville to FACE THE MUSIC.

This short novel is loosely based on the lives of six actual children growing up during the summer of ’62 in a small southern town. An edited version of this book is now included as Part 1 in the recently published,”The Rascals of Stafford Street:The Neighbor We Never Knew.” The story is mostly a comedy wrapped around a thread of darkness which the kids attempt to unravel. The rascals, (myself, two sisters and two cousins, and my best friend), embrace humor every step of the way and savor each hour as a life and death mystery unfolds in their midst. More than anything, the story re-creates a unique place and time which no longer exists except in the collective mind of those of us who were blessed to enjoy such real togetherness and never ending laughter.

Mitzy and her best friends, Everett and Penny (also known as the Linder twins), have just started their sophomore year at Cloudy High. Principal Lanthrop announces a surprise at assembly on Monday morning: a school-wide treasure hunt. The whole town of Pinkerton is big on treasure hunts, and Mitzy and her friends are especially interested in winning because the grand prize is none other than a rare and rather pricey Zoom Zoom skateboard. (How on earth did Cloudy High get its hands on a Zoom Zoom?) Coin finding is exciting at first, but then some typically odd Pinkerton events occur (the town is a little strange…things tend to vanish without explanation), plus Mitzy finds herself the target of a saboteur. Cloudy High is usually a pretty peaceful place, but things are starting to get out of hand! And why would someone target Mitzy? In her opinion, she is a pretty average sherbet punch lover, yoga enthusiast and amateur botanist with no special qualities except for rapidly growing hair. Ever since her mom disappeared three years ago as strangely and as suddenly as Mr. Norman’s American elm tree, she isn’t too big on surprises or attention. Enjoy this semi-mystery full of quirky characters. A perfect story for middle-grade readers.

Number of Pages: 61

Read Review
The Adventures of Tintin (Les Aventures de Tintin) is a series of comic strips created by Belgian artist Herge the pen name of Georges Remi (1907 1983). The series first appeared in French in Le Petit Vingtieme, a children’s supplement to the Belgian newspaper Le Vingtieme Siecle on 10 January 1929. Set in a painstakingly researched world closely mirroring our own, Herge’s Tintin series continues to be a favorite of readers and critics alike 80 years later.
The hero of the series is Tintin, a young Belgian reporter. He is aided in his adventures from the beginning by his faithful fox terrier dog Snowy (Milou in French). Later, popular additions to the cast included the brash, cynical and grumpy Captain Haddock, the bright but hearing-impaired Professor Calculus (Professeur Tournesol) and other colorful supporting characters such as the incompetent detectives Thomson and Thompson (Dupond et Dupont). Herge himself features in several of the comics as a background character; as do his assistants in some instances.
The success of the series saw the serialized strips collected into a series of albums (24 in all), spun into a successful magazine and adapted for film and theatre. The series is one of the most popular European comics of the 20th century, with translations published in over 50 languages and more than 200 million copies of the books sold to date.
The comic strip series has long been admired for its clean, expressive drawings in Herge’s signature ligne claire style. Engaging, well-researched plots straddle a variety of genres: swashbuckling adventures with elements of fantasy, mysteries, political thrillers, and science fiction. The stories within the Tintin series always feature slapstick humor, accompanied in later albums by sophisticated satire, and political and cultural commentary.
