Meet Chipper the songbird, a Northern Cardinal who is rather slow at growing his feathers. He can only hope to be like other birds. Chipper is destined by the nature of his own heart, to deliver a Christmas gift not even Santa sees coming!
This beautifully written narrative poem shares the spirit abiding within. It also shares a wonder of nature, to invite every child to realize nature’s gifts.

No other book of its kind compares to this one’s notoriety and compliment among ACEO artists world wide! Perhaps this is because the book itself has a secret. Anyone can add their own art on paper to any page! So embellish the pages of your choice or enjoy the story as it stands, heart to heart.

———————————————————————————————–
The pages of Santa’s Songbird ™ softcover storybooks facilitate the addition of your choice of compatible art on paper. This makes it possible for you to embellish the story in ways unique to your own vision, turning out a priceless keepsake or gift. Young children can decorate a copy with their own favorite stickers or use blank 3″ x 5″ index cards to create their own pictures to be displayed in the book using photo corners.

Floor Games is a book published in 1911 by H. G. Wells. This light-hearted volume argues in a humorously dictatorial tone that “The jolliest indoor games for boys and girls demand a floor.” It briefly describes a number of games that can be played on “well lit and airy” floors with “four main groups” of toys: soldiers about two inches high (Wells regrets the “curse of militarism” that makes civilians hard to find), largish wooden bricks, boards and planks, and electric railway rolling-stock and rails. Various remarks show that the book is based on Wells’s experience of playing such games with his two sons, George Philip “Gip” Wells (1901-1985) and Frank Richard Wells (1903-1982), identified here only by their initials.

10. The Maid of the North: Feminist Folk Tales from Around the World

by: Ethel Johnston PhelpsLloyd Bloom
Release date: Sep 15, 1982
Number of Pages: 192

Read Review
The Maid of the North weaves together tales about a woman’s right to freedom of will and choice. In this collection of mostly nineteenth-century folk and fairy tales, Ethel Johnston Phelps’s heroines successfully portray women as being spirited, courageous and smart. This type of heroine is not easily found in most collections; in most traditional folk and fairy tales we encounter women are portrayed as being good, obedient, submissive, and, of course, beautiful. These women—and girls—are resourceful; they take action to solve a problem and use cleverness or shrewd common sense to solve the dilemmas they face.

The tales themselves are part of an oral tradition that document a generation according to the values of the time. Phelps has given these older tales a fresh, contemporary retelling for a new generation of readers, young and old. She shapes each story—adding or omitting details—to reflect her sense of a feminist folk or fairy tale.

The twenty-one tales collected represent a wide variety of countries; approximately seventeen ethnic cultures from North America to Europe to Asia tell a story in which women play a leading or crucial role in the story.

20. Pilgrim’s Progress 2: Christiana’s Story

by: John Bunyan
Release date: Nov 20, 2013
Number of Pages: 176
Find in Library
Read Review

John Bunyan could be said to have authored the most influential book in the English language (other than the King James Bible) but The Pilgrim’s Progress is so much more than an historic novel. It was written in two parts. The first (and most famous) part involves Pilgrim leaving his wife and children and risking everything to get to the heavenly city. The second part, which this book is, tells the story of how his wife and children follow him to reach the same destination. Bunyan wants you to travel through this book as an adventure through the Christian life – retold on paper and in pictures. This sequel has an equal place in the hearts of those that read it. Some regard it as even better – though it isn’t so well known. If you haven’t read Christiana’s story before then you will enjoy a new set of challenges to overcome as Christian’s wife and children make their way to the heavenly city. Yet again Bunyan’s imaginative text brings out practical and necessary lessons that everyone needs to know – both yesterday and today.Additional features and study sections have been included to help today’s generation to understand the book. These will help you to get behind some of the characters and places described. There is a ‘life summary’ of Bunyan and some ideas on how to use this book. Some archaic words have been changed to modern equivalents but most of the difficult words are dealt with by using a dictionary and footnotes. This means that although Christiana and her family talk like the medieval travellers they are, you can understand what they’re on about!

One of the most popular pieces of American fiction is Washington Irving’s “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow,” originally published in 1820 in Irving’s short story collection The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Set in New York’s Hudson River valley after the American Revolution, it is rich with Dutch culture, regional history, and ghost stories. In schoolmaster Ichabod Crane and his adversary the Headless Horseman, Irving created two of the most unforgettable characters in American literature.

This short work is part of Applewood’s “American Roots,” series, tactile mementos of American passions by some of America’s most famous writers and thinkers.
