From KIDS FIRST!: A classic holiday film that continues to delight children and adults alike. Doris Walker is a no-nonsense divorced Macy’s executive who desperately searches for a new store Santa. She hires a kind but quirky old man named Kris Kringle who insists that he’s the real Santa Claus. Despite reassurances by Kringle’s doctor that he is harmless, Doris remains skeptical. Eventually, Kris Kringle goes to court to try and prove it. Is he the real Santa Claus? This is truly a perennial family holiday film. Charming, with a great cast, and well produced, Miracle On 34th Street reveals typical society and daily life in the 1940s. Kids today may not realize what an anomaly a divorced working mom was at that time. Natalie Wood plays a brilliant six-year-old. While some scenarios seem unreal, the story is so strong that it suspends reality. KIDS FIRST!® Child Juror Comments: The best. Entirely held kids’ attention. Made them feel sad and then happy. “Pretty cool even though it is old.” 96 min.; Ages 8-12.

From the VHS cover description:
Mr. Magoo’s Christmas Carol is the first-ever animated holiday special made for television, the one that started it all! The famously nearsighted Mr. Magoo is Ebenezer Scrooge in the musical retelling of Charles Dickens’ classic “A Christmas Carol.”
Featuring original songs by Broadway legends Jule Styne and Bob Merrill (Funny Girl), this family classic stars the voice talents of Jim Backus (Gilligan’s Island), Morey Amsterdam (The Dick Van Dyke Show), Jack Cassidy and June Foray (The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle).

Scrooge was designed as a follow-up to 1968’s Oliver, the Oscar-winning musicalization of Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist. The umpteenth musical version of Dickens’ 1843 novelette A Christmas Carol, Scrooge is blessed with several sprightly Leslie Bricusse songs, including the bonafide hit Thank You Very Much. Once more buried under mounds of latex, Albert Finney is perfection itself as Ebeneezer Scrooge, proving as effective as a young (un-made up) man as the old skinflint we’ve grown to love. The Three Ghosts who turn the miserly Scrooge’s life around on Christmas Eve are portrayed by Edith Evans (Past), Kenneth More (Present) and Paddy Stone (Yet to Come). Our favorite among the huge, predominantly British supporting cast is Sir Alec Guinness as a fussy, slightly effeminate Marley’s Ghost. Best of all, Finney performs his many songs “live” and not lip-synched to a pre-recording. Though it is overproduced to the hilt, and its Technicolor photography tends to induce eyestrain, Scrooge is more than satisfactory Yuletide entertainment.

This bizarre, pagan take on the Santa Claus legend, which is based on a story by L. Frank Baum (The Wizard of Oz), was produced and directed by Rankin and Bass, the reigning kings of the Christmas special (Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer), using their brand of puppet animation. In the forest of Burzee, the immortals gather to discuss the fate of Santa Claus. Found when he was an abandoned baby by the Great Ak (a wizard with big wooden horns on his head), the boy was named Claus because that means “little one” in the language of the forest. Raised by immortals and knowing nothing but peace and harmony, the adolescent Claus is taken on a tour of the mortal world by the Great Ak, and he discovers the world is rife with misery and injustice. This is when he decides he will dedicate his life to making kids happy, and he learns the best way to do this is to give them toys. After years of service, the immortals must decide whether or not to give him eternal life. Indeed, this is a very strange Christmas tale. –Andy Spletzer

“Mama, when was Santa Claus born? Why doesn’t he ever die?” Based on the popular children’s book by L. Frank Baum (author of The Wizard of Oz), this 75-minute animated version of The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus provides answers to these and other pressing questions from the 3- to 8-year-old set. As in Baum’s book, the quiet, moderately paced video steers clear of Christian references, focusing instead on wood nymphs, pixies, and magic. A wizardly fairy named Ak (voiced by Hal Holbrook, who also narrates the tale) helps the young Nicholas (Robby Benson) understand human misery and charges him with the task of serving mankind. Nicholas’s talent for charming little children and brightening the lives of the poor–and poor at heart–soon turns into a lifelong career. Baum’s imaginative scenario involves many bumps along the way; most unusual is a fight between good and evil (here demonstrated by a group of naughty thugs who curiously resemble rock Pokémon). Lush, realistic backgrounds of misty forests and blustery, snow-laden towns contrast surprisingly with roughly drawn characters, detracting from the film’s overall quality. But a pleasing Celtic score and a strong message of hope, giving, and caring easily outweigh this minor flaw. Puppet animators Rankin and Bass did a shorter version of the same story in the ’80s. –Liane Thomas
