In Paris, France, there lived a humble postman named Lalouche. He was small, but his hands were nimble, his legs were fast, and his arms were strong. When his job was replaced by an electric car, he turned to boxing to support himself and his pet finch, Genevieve. But–“You? A boxer?” the fighters asked. “I could sneeze and knock you down!” Still, Lalouche refused to give up. And perhaps small Lalouche was just nimble . . . just fast . . . and just strong enough to beat his fierce competitors. This is a marvelous story, full of humor and heart, and illustrated by Sophie Blackall, winner of a New York Times Best Illustrated Award.

Her patient is the artist Henri Matisse, and as Matisse recovers from his illness, he and Monique become good friends. Later, Monique enters a convent where she becomes a nursing nun?and by happy coincidence, she meets Matisse once again. Her religious order is so poor that they don’t have a chapel of their own, but Matisse decides that with Monique’s help, he can remedy that situation. He develops a sketch drawn by Monique into a brilliant set of stained-glass chapel windows, and then uses his influence to raise enough money for the chapel’s construction. This true account of Matisse and the chapel at Vence, in southern France, is the main focus of Laurence Anholt’s newest delightful children’s story. Anholt’s illustrations faithfully reproduce many of Matisse’s wonderful artworks in this beautiful storybook.

Beloved storyteller and creator Ashley Bryan reveals the vibrant spirit of found objects in this magnificent treasury of poetry and puppets.

Little Cranberry Island. It’s a small island, with fewer than a hundred inhabitants, but it’s got more than its share of treasures—including the magnificent Ashley Bryan himself, a world-renowned storyteller and author of such classics as All Night, All Day and Beautiful Blackbird. Daily, for decades, Ashley has walked up and down the beach, stopping to pick up sea glass, weathered bones, a tangle of fishing net, an empty bottle, a doorknob. Treasure.

And then, with glue and thread and paint and a sprinkling of African folklore, Ashley breathes new life into these materials. Others might consider it beach junk, but Ashley sees worlds of possibilities.

Ashley Bryan’s two-foot-tall hand puppets swell with personality and beauty, and in this majestic collection they make their literary debut, each with a poem that tells of their creation and further enlivens their spirit.

Jake and his Grandpa head off to the gold fields to search for gold.
It’s much harder for Grandpa to find gold than he expects.
What they find just proves that one man’s trash is indeed another boy’s treasure.
A warm-hearted story of a boy and his grandfather sharing an unforgettable adventure.

AUTHOR INTERVIEW: Robin Adolphs

We could do with more children’s picture books about adventure and exploration, what made you decide to write Grandpa’s Gold?

I’ve been visiting the Australian gold fields for years. I realized that some city children may never get the chance to experience outback Australia and see where a unique part of Australian history unfolded. That was part of it. Also, Grandpa’s Gold is based on the real experience my husband and grandson shared. Jake was so fascinated by the bush and prospecting I just had to write this story.

The strong relationship between Grandpa and Jake is not often seen in an illustrated children’s story, how did this come about?

I like all my stories to have strong, emotional themes. When we took Jake into the bush I saw the relationship between Jake and his grandfather grow and strengthen as they shared a common interest. Grandpa’s Gold was inspired by the special relationship I saw unfolding from day to day. I just needed to piece it all together in a way young children would understand.

Are you planning on writing any more gold rush books for kids?

I have already. I’ve written ‘Jake’s Golden Handbook’, a companion non-fiction e-book to Grandpa’s Gold. In this book Jake tells kids what they have to do to find gold. This is free from my website with the purchase of Grandpa’s Gold. Details are on my website. I also co-wrote a song with Jenny James called ‘Come Along To the Gold fields’. I’m not planning any more gold rush books as yet; but who knows?

You seem to enjoy writing preschool books for 2-8 years, why do you like writing for this age group so much?

This is the age when the love of reading begins. I was an Early Childhood teacher and saw how vital it was for children of this age to engage with good stories. There can never be enough stories written for this age group. And the learning possibilities from good picture books are immense. That’s why all my books have free downloadable teaching and learning activities on my website to go with them.

Author Molly Blaisdell transports young readers to the city of Amsterdam in the 1650s. It is a time when world-renowned artist Rembrandt van Rijn is at the height of fame among his patrons—and when his young son Titus longs to imitate his father and become a great painter. At first, Rembrandt rebuffs Titus’s attempts at drawing, telling the boy he is too young to learn art. But gradually, the master painter is won over by his son’s enthusiasm and persistence, and he begins to teach a very happy Titus the basic techniques of drawing from life. Here is a warmhearted story for children, with illustrations that capture the atmosphere of seventeenth-century Holland and suggest some of the genius that radiates from Rembrandt’s own magnificent paintings.

But at night she and her family gather around the woodstove to hear stories of castles and princes in hiding. They take horse-drawn sleigh rides, snug under buffalo robes and wool blankets; skate in the moonlight; and on Christmas morning have real maple syrup for breakfast.
With absorbing details of country life and elegant, hand-colored woodcuts, this book captures the strength of family, the magic of Christmas, and the love of place all year long.
