Some things never change, including the human need to connect with our creator. Prayer and meditation on the divine are techniques that have been used for millennia to grow in the knowledge of God. Cloud of Unknowing documents techniques used by the medieval monastic community to build and maintain that contemplative knowledge of God. Scholars date the anonymous authorship of Cloud of Unknowing to 1375, during the height of European monasticism. Written as a primer for the young monastic, the work is instructional, but does not have an austere didactic tone. Rather, the work embraces the reader with a maternal call to grow closer to God through meditation and prayer.

In 1975, Alcoholics Anonymous published a book called Living Sober. In it, many alcoholics shared how they stayed sober. Staying sober, after all, is the basis of recovery from alcoholism. Most of us in GreySheeters Anonymous (GSA) agree with the premise that the basis of our recovery from food addiction is learning how to live without bingeing, starving, grazing, or whatever form of abuse our eating took. Using Living Sober as a guide to living in recovery, we have put together our own book called Living Abstinent.

Make no mistake, sponsorship is a scary proposition. Anyone who tells you otherwise doesn’t understand what real sponsorship is. Even offering an honest guide for others to use will be criticized. I’ve listened to these people says this is a “dangerous” topic for discussion and then they sit on their butts by doing nothing to help. This has been going on for years! Well I’ll take the heat gladly. I’ve seen too many die from this disease so I will tell you what turned me around and helped me become an more effective sponsor for those who asked for help. I don’t speak for Alcoholics Anonymous. No one does. What I will be doing here is sharing the effective method pointed out in the Big Book and the experiences learned from 12 Step calls over a 30 year period. This is a guide to prepare a person in recovery for the job of helping another by following the path laid out by our Big Book of Recovery and depending on a Higher Power.

Based on the hugely popular Facebook page ”Shit Towns of New Zealand”, this book describes New Zealand”s towns and suburbs from the affluent to the effluent, the rural to the urinal, profiling all the best places not to visit, or heaven forbid, live. Slagging off our towns is as much a national pastime as binge drinking and ball sports. Ever since a Dutch bloke in a sailboat did a drive-by and claimed to have discovered the place, New Zealanders have revelled in taking the mickey. The towns and cities reviewed here have been carefully selected using an exacting set of scientific criteria, combined with extensive field research and a healthy sense of humour.

Eating Disorders Anonymous: The Story of How We Recovered from Our Eating Disorders presents the accumulated experience, strength, and hope of many who have followed a Twelve-Step approach to recover from their eating disorders. Eating Disorders Anonymous (EDA), founded by sober members of Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), have produced a work that emulates the “Big Book” in style and substance. EDA respects the pioneering work of AA while expanding its Twelve-Step message of hope to include those who are religious or seek a spiritual solution, and for those who are not and may be more comfortable substituting “higher purpose” for the traditional “Higher Power.” Further, the EDA approach embraces the development and maintenance of balance and perspective, rather than abstinence, as the goal of recovery. Initial chapters provide clear directions on how to establish a foothold in recovery by offering one of the founder’s story of hope, and collective voices tell why EDA is suitable for readers with any type of problem eating, including: anorexia nervosa, bulimia, binge eating, emotional eating, and orthorexia. The text then explains how to use the Twelve Steps to develop a durable and resilient way of thinking and acting that is free of eating disordered thoughts and behaviors, including how to pay it forward so that others might have hope of recovery. In the second half of the text, individual contributors share their experiences, describing what it was like to have an eating disorder, what happened that enabled them to make a start in recovery, and what it is like to be in recovery. Like the “Big Book,” these stories are in three sections: Pioneers of EDA, They Stopped in Time, and They Lost Nearly All. Readers using the Twelve Steps to recover from other issues will find the process consistent and reinforcing of their experiences, yet the EDA approach offers novel ideas and specific guidance for those struggling with food, weight and body image issues. Letters of support from three, highly-regarded medical professionals and two, well-known recovery advocates offer reassurance that EDA’s approach is consistent with that supported by medical research and standards in the field of eating disorders treatment. Intended as standard reading for members who participate in EDA groups throughout the world, this book is accessible and appropriate for anyone who wants to recover from an eating disorder or from issues related to food, weight, and body image.

My name is Casey, I’m an alcoholic. As I write this, I’m almost nineteen years old. I’ll always be nineteen years old, because I’m a fictional character. The things that are real in my story are the diseases of alcoholism and addiction. The author used a few familiar names of people to remember who the characters were. However, the people in my life are not based upon the life of E. Anonymous. E. Anonymous is lucky I came along when I did. Because my story was the closest we could come to a fearless and searching moral inventory of ourselves. I got very sick, very quickly. E. Anonymous was honest enough to throw every character defect in the book at me. That was pretty rough, but it was honest. That’s what I hope people will get out of my story, honesty. Maybe you’re an alcoholic, or an addict. Maybe someone you love is going down the wrong path. Maybe you’re not ready to listen to real people talking about real life. My story is short and sweet, with a happy ending. I’m blessed with a fictional life, and a recovering author. Your story is being written jointly by God and yourself. You’ll make choices, but free will may allow your ego to kill you. Mine nearly did. I don’t want to scare you, but I will if I have to. I’m not real, but E. Anonymous is. I promise we’ll be honest.

The “penny blood” came into being through a process which began with higher standards of general education and literacy in England at the beginning of the 19th century, and continued with the invention of fast and efficient printing presses and cheap paper production. These combined elements simultaneously created a new, mass market for literature, and fed that market with new, affordable product. The gothic novel, popular amongst a rarefied class of literary readers, duly gave way to sensationalistic, graphic shockers for the masses. The PENNY BLOOD CLASSICS ebook series, which focuses on the “golden age” of the penny bloods, continues with the legendary tale of Spring-Heeled Jack, first reported in 1808, and again in 1837. Spring-Heeled Jack was described by people who claimed to have seen him as having a terrifying and frightful appearance, with diabolical physiognomy, clawed hands, eyes that “resembled red balls of fire”, and the ability to perform astounding leaps. Jack was perfect melodrama material, and in 1840 John Thomas Haines wrote “Spring-Heeled Jack, the Terror of London”, a play portraying him as a villain who stalks and attacks innocent women. This volume features “Spring-Heeled Jack: The Terror Of London”, an anonymous penny blood published by the Newsagents” Publishing Company c.1864-1867. The book also includes an extensive introduction on the history of the penny blood.

It was on an otherwise uneventful Sunday morning in early Spring when the minister of a small Methodist church in Appalachia provided a sermon based on the 23rd Psalm of the Holy Bible. He reminded his meager congregation that they should not fear the act of witnessing for Jesus Christ, even if it takes them into the proverbial Valley of Darkness. Little did the pastor realize that his routine sermon would result in the book that you now hold in your hands – a revolutionary approach not only to witnessing, but to modern day Christianity itself. As a curious reader, you will soon recognize why this manifesto was written anonymously and you may even come to the conclusion that you too can be considered an “Anonymous Witness.”

About The Author: “The World Famous Anonymous Author” has no desire for fame. He once said, “Writing a published book is an honor within itself.” We honestly believe it would be wrong to publicly identify someone who prefers to remain anonymous. About The Book: This is one “small” book filled with many “big” ideas designed to reach nations with information about Elijah alias James. This “one crazy man” with God connections has revelations for Christians with open minds. Shocking revelations about the controversial life of “the man” will impact conventional ideas about politics, religion, survival of civilizations and the mysterious 19 March 2006 event! Explanations about the supernatural transformation of James Reesor from sinner to prophet provides spiritual/psychological insight into events leading to “THE MESSAGE FROM GOD” and the acronym “JIGROP” – meaning: “Jesus Is God; Repent Or Perish.”

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) has an estimated worldwide membership of two million. This collaborative study offers the first comprehensive look at AA as a social movement, a belief system, a model for small group interactions, and a truly international phenomenon. The international success of AA is evidence that a system of thought and a program of action developed in middle-class North America in the 1930s can be adapted and made relevant in cultural environments as diverse as the slums of Mexico City, the factory towns of Poland, and the farm villages of Switzerland. The authors look at what actually happens in an AA meeting, how members interact, and how the AA model fits into widely varying cultural traditions. The book includes the early history of AA and its organizational principles, its international growth, and its present structure, finances, and membership. The chapters pay particular attention to the relationships of belief and action in AA, the role of written and oral tradition in the transmission of the beliefs, and cultural variations in the content of the belief system. Because AA is a mutual-help movement, the authors contrast it with professional health care of various kinds, including 12-step programs, and compare it with alternative mutual-aid organizations. The book draws on an abundance of data, including surveys, observation, in-depth talks with members, and a wealth of unpublished documents pertaining to AA in Austria, Finland, Iceland, Mexico, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States. The authors analyze AA’s organizational guidelines as an innovative code of principles for non-hierarchic and non-bureaucratic social structures, and suggest that AA is the prototype for an emerging social form.

In his role of apostle of the English and promoter of Augustine”s mission, Gregory the Great became the subject of what is one of the earliest pieces of literature surviving from the Anglo-Saxon period: a Life written by an unknown author at Whitby around 680-704. Although crude in its latinity and idiosyncratic in its presentation, this work is a fascinating source of early traditions about the conversion of the English – including the famous story of Gregory”s encounter with the Anglian slave boys – and an important witness to the veneration felt for the saint himself. It casts valuable light on English history in the seventh century, particularly on the career of Edwin of Northumbria, and is the source of two of the most famous legends of the Middle Ages, the Mass of St Gregory and the story of Trajan”s rescue from hell. The Life of Gregory seems to be the earliest of the Saints” lives of this period and it is in many ways the most remarkable.
