The final film by the legendary director Howard Hawks, released in 1970, found him paired with longtime leading man John Wayne in a story slightly similar to their more familiar Rio Bravo and El Dorado. Set at the end of the Civil War, the story finds Wayne playing a Union army colonel who recovers some stolen gold and roots out a traitor. Though a little creaky (Hawks had been making films since 1926), Rio Lobo nevertheless has his trademark, crackling dialogue, appealing characters, and ensemble spirit among the cast. This was a worthy finish to a fantastic career by a first-rank filmmaker.

John Wayne, Jennifer O’Neill. Two former Confederate soldiers team up with an ex-Union officer to settle some old scores with a bootlegger, a crooked sheriff and everyone else who crossed them. The last feature film directed by Howard Hawks. 1970/color/105 min/G/widescreen.

Orphan Lili Daurier joins a carnival and falls under the spell of its star, a suave magician. But it is the show’s crippled, embittered puppeteer who truly loves Lili, a love he can express only through his puppets. “It is not often that the word ‘enchanting’ can accurately be applied to a musical,” Clive Hirschhorn wrote in The Hollywood Musical, “but it was the best way to describe Lili, as well as Leslie Caron’s genuinely touching performance.” Nominated for six Academy Awards®, Lili offers sentiment without sugar, simplicity without banality and a lyrical heart that beats to an Oscar®-winning Bronislau Kaper score highlighted by Hi-Lili, Hi-Lo and an imaginative sequence of Caron dancing with her beloved puppets come to life. Mel Ferrer, Jean Pierre Aumont, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Amanda Blake and Kurt Kasznar also star.

One of the most popular movie musicals ever made! Funny Girl follows the early career of stage comedienne Fanny Brice, a role that earned Barbra Streisand the 1968 Oscar(R) for Best Actress. As the film opens, only her mother believes Fanny can make it in show business. When she gets her first break at Keeney’s Music Hall, her hilarious debut as a roller-skating chorus girl gets her hired as a comedienne. A year later Fanny is working for Florenz Ziegfeld in his famous Follies and brings the house down with an outrageous and unplanned number. Fanny becomes a star, falls in love and marries Nick Arnstein (Omar Sharif), a handsome gambler whose luck doesn’t hold up. The film’s many memorable songs include “Don’t Rain On My Parade” and the Streisand classic “People.”
