26. The Beatles – Help!

Following the success of Hard Day’s Night, the Fab-Four and director Richard Lester pooled their talents once again for the film initially titled Eight Arms to Hold You, before everyone involved decided on the better-known Help!. Fanciful and fantastical, it is a kind of Beatles-in-Wonderland story, with our lovable mop-tops running from a religious cult that believe the ring on Ringo’s finger is a prized and sacred object. Entering a world of steadfast nonsense, it’s gags-galore as the gang go on a surreal and swinging adventure while singing “Ticket to Ride” and “You’ve Got to Hide Your Love Away” in Bahamian, Austrian and English settings. The Marx Brothers influences are prevalent in this very funny musical.

Henry Graham (Walter Matthau) is a man with a problem: he has run through his entire inheritance and is completely unequipped to provide for himself. His childhood guardian, Uncle Harry (a deliciously mean-spirited James Coco), refuses to give him a dime, so Henry devises a plan with the help of his imaginative butler (George Rose) to make his money the old-fashioned way – he can marry it. But he cannot see himself as a happily married man, so he comes up with an even more devious solution… with a temporary loan from his uncle, Henry has six weeks to find a bride and repay the loan; otherwise he must forfeit all his property to his uncle. Henry finally meets his dearly beloved, a clumsy, painfully shy heiress Henrietta Lowell (played by the film’s writer/director Elaine May). The answer to his prayers – if only he can overcome the obstacles placed in his path by his uncle and Henrietta’s Lawyer (Jack Weston).

Holiday Inn is a perennial, Christmas-season favourite from 1942 teamed Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire as entertainers (and rival suitors of Marjorie Reynolds) running an inn that is only open on holidays. It’s a great excuse for lots of singing and dancing, seamlessly wrapped in a catchy story, and Astaire’s frequent director Mark Sandrich (Top Hat, Shall We Dance?) doesn’t let us down. The Irving Berlin numbers (each one connected to a different holiday) are winners. Crosby’s warm performance of “White Christmas” is a movie touchstone. –Tom Keogh

Barbara Streisand is a knockout as Dolly Levi, the woman “who arranges things like furniture and daffodils and lives.” And Hello Dolly, is the blockbuster musical you’ll want to see her in again and again. The famed plot concerns Dolly, a young widow and professional matchmaker who sets her sights, and whatever else she can muster, on conquering tight-fisted Yonkers merchant, Horace Vandergeider, beautifully played by Walter Matthau. How she does it has to be the grandest, singingest, dancingest, marchingest flag-wavingest musical there ever was.

In his notorious masterpiece, The Great Dictator, Charlie Chaplin (City Lights, Modern Times) offers both a cutting caricature of Adolf Hitler and a sly tweaking of his own comic persona. Chaplin (in his first pure talkie) brings his sublime physicality to two roles: the cruel yet clownish “Tomanian” dictator and the kindly Jewish barber who is mistaken for him. Featuring Jack Oakie (Thieves’ Highway, Lover Come Back) and Paulette Goddard (Modern Times, The Women) in stellar supporting turns, The Great Dictator, boldly going after the fascist leader before the U.S.’s official entry into World War II, is an audacious amalgam of politics and slapstick that culminates in Chaplin’s famously impassioned plea for tolerance.

It’s one thing to understand men and women in general – it’s another thing to understand the one you got stuck with! In this highly-entertaining DVD, national marriage expert, Mark Gungor, explores the differences between men and women or what he calls, ‘The Laws of Relational Physics’. Specifically, how men and women are wired differently. They act differently, they communicate differently and most importantly, they think differently. Mark shows couples that their problems may result from how men and women THINK about life in a different way. He explains that many of the struggles couples face in marriage are the result of a HEAD problem, not a HEART problem. In addition you’ll discover: – The importance of sex in your marriage. – About that secret place your husband loves to go to The Nothing Box. – How to get a man to do what you want him to do. Four simple steps to change the flow of give and take in your relationship. Filmed in high-definition, this DVD is taken from Mark’s weekend seminar, Laugh Your Way to a Better Marriage. Honest, hard-hitting and hilarious, this is a DVD you’ll want to share with friends and family over and over.

Limited Edition of 3,000 Units

Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines, Or How I Flew from London to Paris in 25 Hours 11 Minutes (1965) is an epic comedy, set in the early days of aviation, about a cross-Channel, London-to-Paris air race sponsored by press magnate Lord Rawnsley (Robert Morley). Among the competitors for the £10,000 purse are an English aristo (James Fox), spurred on by his flight-mad fiancée (Sarah Miles); an American cowpoke (Stuart Whitman); a pair of absurdly militaristic Germans (Gert Fröbe, Karl Michael Vogler); a French lover extraordinaire (Jean-Pierre Cassel); an operatic Italian (Alberto Sordi); and a moustache-twirling British villain of comically evil proportions (Terry-Thomas). Lovingly directed by aviation buff Ken Annakin (The Longest Day), with a superbly catchy score from Ron Goodwin (available here as an isolated track).

Special Features:

– Isolated Score Track

– Audio Commentary with Filmmaker Ken Annakin

– Trailers and TV Spots
