“Believing is Seeing”

In the tradition of such favorite classics as Gulliver’s Travels and Journey to the Center of the Earth, Voyage of the Basset takes the reader on a fantastical journey of discovery. Through richly detailed full-color paintings and line drawings, magical kingdoms emerge from a sea of dreams.

Cassandra Aisling, who is nine years and eleven months old, doesn’t care “a jot” about what sensible people think. She likes strange, mysterious, and magical things. So when her world gets tumbled upside down, she boards the H.M.S. Basset, ready to explore the landscape of her imagination. Pledging allegiance to the Basset’s motto, “Credendo do Vides…Believing is Seeing,” Cassandra, her skeptical older sister Miranda, and their father, Professor Algernon Aisling, set out in search of the ancient legends. From the flickering flight of fairies and the mermaids’ siren songs to a labyrinth-bound Minotaur and a fire-breathing dragon, the Aisling family witnesses firsthand the wonder of mythological worlds.

In this lavishly illustrated edition, Cassandra’s adventures intertwine with her father’s scientific scribblings to present both new tales and the essence of classical myths. From the two voices, readers learn the power of imagination, the importance of believing in oneself, the value of family, and the need for creative, cooperative problem-solving. The story of a magical journey and the exquisite fantasy artwork will appeal to young and old alike.

Tiptoes Lightly is a fairy who lives in an acorn high in the branches of a Great Oak Tree. Big-Stamp Two-Toes the Barefoot Giant follows her adventures – and those of her friends – through springtime at Farmer John’s. On the way Ompliant the Elephant has his leg pulled by Chit-Chat the Chipmunk; Tiptoes sails down to the sea and brings Spinner the Dolphin up Running River to see flowers for the very first time; Tom Nutcracker tracks giant footprints into the forest but gets himself treed, and Meadow Mouse almost gets eaten by Tiger (luckily Mr. Owl the Vegetarian saves her!) Along the way tales and legends are told: Miranda the spring pixie tells how the little blue and yellow Forget-me-not came to be; Mr. Rabbit tells all the mouselings about the Legend of Oak Knoll Warren, and the spirit of ‘The Rock’ reveals how he came to be lying in the middle of the forest far away from the mountains (because of Big-Stamp Two-Toes the Barefoot Giant, of course!)

Big-Stamp Two-Toes the Barefoot Giant is lavishly illustrated by the artist-author. These stories are reverent, humorous, sanguine and even, at times, spiritual. They are innocent and magical tales, suitable for reading to young children or for young children to read.

They lead a team dedicated to saving and protecting animals, and discovering how to use nature to find cures for many deadly diseases that ravage mankind. It solidifies belief in the power of her legacy and the importance of working with nature to solve many of the problems faced by mankind. This discovery, and Marina’s work with and love of snakes, lead Sara’s father to exploring the use of natural venoms in the development of cancer-fighting medicines. That secret research into a cancer cure draws the unwanted interest of others. Humans know nothing of danger, less of death and therefore do not live with honor. So thinks our hero-hamster until he meets the girl who will become the love of his life: the source of his greatest joy and deepest loss. The Feast of the Moon is fiction for middle grade and junior high readers, their moms and dads and anyone who has ever loved a pet. With humor and by thrilling adventure (by hamster standards), it explores how brothers and sisters get along, as well as the nature of life, danger and friendship. Whether persevering through the hazing by the girl’s older brother, the assaults by the family cat, or attacks by predators in the wild, he adheres to his philosophy of “Honor and Danger”…until he discovers the surprising concept of “Cherish.” It is a tale told by a hamster. But as he tells the story – being snatched by humans as a youngster; learning to love his adolescent owner; escaping into the prairie; his reunion with his human friend – our hamster learns as much about himself as he does the sky-wide prairie.

After many years of rescuing elderly pugs. In 2008 we were asked to take in a little disabled Pug puppy who we named Horton. Horton changed our lives and touched the hearts of everyone who ever met him. The Joy of Horton is a celebration of a life well lived by a little pug who was small in stature but had the true spirit of a lion dwelling within him. Horton was cheeky and fearless and funny and wonderful. Chapter after chapter tells of the adventures he got up to living on a farm in the company of his seven elderly brothers and sisters. Horton stalked our sheep and got kissed by our Clydesdale, he took a huge amount of joy in every single day he was given. Horton shared our life for three glorious years before we lost him. This book is a story of strength and determination. Horton wasn’t a quitter; he faced things head on and got on with living the best life he could regardless of the body he had born into. Horton got pushed around our paddocks in a beautiful blue and white pram and called out to the sheep and horses as he went along, trying to encourage them to come over and play with him. On the ground he was bold and fearless and would shuffle up to our Clydesdale like he wasn’t even aware of the differences in sizes. It was the same with our flock of sheep. Horton would peep through the fence watching the livestock grazing and again shouting out to them to come closer. And as for the old pugs in the house, well they took on a new lease of life, some mothered him, some played with him and some jumped up on the couch to have a break from him.

Reviews

A Must Read for All Pet Lovers
I read this book in one sitting. I laughed, I cried, but mostly I marveled at how many lives (pets and people) John’s work touched and enhanced. In full disclosure, I attended high school with John and found out about his book from one of our classmates.

John’s book went beyond what I’d expected, as it was not just another wonderful collection of James Herriot tales of a vet’s life. It was this, therefore the laughing and the crying, but it also made me aware as to the effects that big business can have upon the quality of life for those of us who love our pets almost as much as we love our kids. It also impressed upon me how important it is to stay informed about our pet’s health and to do the research necessary regarding the options that may be available.

Valuable information interspersed with heartwarming stories of living a meaningful life.

The Grand Canyon continues to be the most popular of our national parks. While millions gaze at its cliffs each year, only 15,000 float through the canyon on the Colorado River. A landmark portrait of the Grand Canyon, this is the only photography book to document this amazing journey from river level. Now this classic is back in print, with an updated preface and introduction and a dozen new photographs. A journal in photos and words, The Hidden Canyon captures the desert landscape and the thrill of the rapids. Edward Abbey’s journal—filled with wry humor and respect for the canyon—describes the journey as the dories (small wooden boats) alternately float and charge through the breathtaking landscapes and some of the roughest white water in North America.?

“Hello, Kimmie.”

Ex-cop Kim Kovak is stunned. Peter is back, the former fiancé who abandoned her years ago during her painful recovery from a career-ending injury. Why is he here? What is he after?

Garrett Quaid, Kim’s part-time investigative partner and now close friend, is wondering the same thing.

And then the cases start cropping up.

On a photo shoot at a horse show featuring the Black Horsemen of Ohio, Kim observes what might be a racially motivated attack against a young protégé of the group’s sponsor, legendary African American horse trainer Bill Scott. When odd things begin to happen at Scott’s own stables, Kim is asked to investigate, but immediately finds herself surrounded by stonewalls. Mouths are closed, everyone is hiding things, and nothing is what it seems.

Meanwhile, Quaid is being wooed by a new insurance company, and agrees to take on an assignment to test the waters. His mission is to look into a suspiciously high number of claims generated by a series of very sudden horse deaths at an Indiana racetrack. As he begins seining for information, clues are scarce and suspects ellusive. Could this number of deaths be accidental? Coincidental? Or are they deliberate?

Weave in a tangle of deceptions, obsessions and schemes, and the mystery business gets extra risky, especially when Kovak and Quaid start pulling the threads in Toni Leland’s fourth book in the series.

Based on a real military program! The US Navy’s new breed of soldier is ready to make a big splash.

An action-packed, maritime military adventure from the author of Dog Tags.

A notorious Somalian pirate sails the Arabian Sea, leading a band of deadly thieves and mercenaries on an international crime spree. When they take American hostages aboard a cargo ship, they’ve finally gone too far — and a special task force of Navy SEALs and Marines is called in to help. SEALs, Marines . . . and a talented sea lion named Sly.

As Sly’s handler, young sailor Felix has two important jobs. Job one is to get Sly to plant a beacon so that the U.S. strike force can follow the pirates back to their haven. Job two is to keep the sea lion safe and out of combat. But when the mission goes wrong and the pirates get the upper hand, Felix and Sly end up right in the middle of the action . . . with dozens of innocent lives at stake.

This book is for anyone who cares about horses, any domestic animals and books about human nature.  All of the cases in this book are real and everything that is written is true.

The drama and suspense will leave you wondering how people can abuse these wonderful creatures but feel satisfied that there are many people who really care and will go to all ends to prevent it.
